Every June 12, Nigerians commemorate the life and legacy of Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (M.K.O.) Abiola—the symbol of our democratic struggle and the man whose name remains etched in the hearts of millions. This year, just like the years before, celebrations continue in Nigeria, presided over by the President himself. But beneath the ceremonies and tributes, one must ask: What has become of the spirit of June 12?
June 12 was not born from government patronage—it was birthed by resistance. It was the product of a determined opposition that dared to demand more from leadership. Sadly, the essence of this day appears to have been diluted, hijacked by political elites who use it as a platform for self-congratulations instead of reflection and advocacy.
Since the All Progressives Congress (APC) came to power over a decade ago, June 12 has increasingly lost its democratic edge. What should be a solemn call to action has become a festive ritual, devoid of its original urgency. The current administration has done little to preserve the true meaning of this day, reducing it to a symbolic event rather than a time to critique governance and uphold democratic ideals.
Where is the opposition today?
The truth is uncomfortable but must be told: Nigeria’s opposition is on life support. The same voices that once wielded June 12 as a weapon for change are now mute. Ironically, the ruling party, once a beacon of opposition, has systematically silenced dissent. Whether through strategy or suppression, the fact remains—viable opposition voices are now rare.
Yet, opposition is not a luxury; it is a necessity. A functioning democracy thrives on checks and balances, not uniformity. When those currently in power were in opposition, they held leaders accountable, spoke truth to power, and galvanized the public. That vigilance brought them to prominence—and ultimately to power.
Today’s opposition must learn from that history. Leadership demands strategy, not just ambition. Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, now President, demonstrated this by placing collective vision above personal gain. He supported multiple presidential candidates—including Alhaji Atiku Abubakar—before pursuing his own presidential ambition. That calculated patience played a key role in his eventual victory.
It is time for perennial candidates like Atiku to reflect. If after several attempts the goal remains elusive, perhaps the wiser course is to support a new generation of leadership and trust in divine timing. Political maturity sometimes means stepping aside for the greater good.
To honor Chief Abiola’s legacy, Nigeria needs a strong, credible opposition. One that speaks for the people, challenges the status quo, and inspires trust. The cycle of mass defections and political carpet-crossing only breeds apathy. Democracy weakens when politicians treat ideology like convenience.
For the masses, June 12 should be more than a remembrance—it must be a rallying cry. Each citizen must recognize their role in shaping Nigeria’s future. Democracy demands more than passive observation; it requires active participation, accountability, and collective resolve.
We must also confront a bitter truth: we enable our own political oppression. If elections were held today between General Sani Abacha and M.K.O. Abiola, Abiola would still win—even if Abacha outspent him. Why? Because character matters. Yet, when election season comes, many forget their pain, accept handouts, and return failed leaders to office.
If we truly commit to civic responsibility, Nigeria can produce leaders guided by service, not selfishness. Leaders who embody the sacrifice and integrity that June 12 represents. The future we want depends on what we do today.
This Democracy Day, let us renew our pledge to the principles that underpin a just society— active citizenship, responsible leadership, and unwavering opposition to injustice. The future of our democracy depends not just on who leads, but on how we, the people, hold them accountable.
