A dispatch rider has died in a fatal road crash at Motorways inward Estate, Alapere area of Lagos State after an empty tanker reportedly rammed into his motorcycle.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority confirmed the incident in a statement on Monday, saying the crash involved a NIPCO tanker with registration number TTN 776ZQ.
According to the General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare Oki, preliminary findings indicated that the tanker was allegedly speeding before it hit the rider, leading to his instant death at the scene.
He explained that traffic officers were quickly deployed to the location to restore order after some aggrieved dispatch riders attempted to attack the tanker driver following the crash.
LASTMA also noted that operatives were able to prevent further breakdown of law and order while ensuring the situation did not escalate into violence.
The injured tanker driver was rescued and handed over to the Lagos State Ambulance Service for urgent medical attention at a nearby hospital.
Police operatives from the Alausa Division were also said to have intervened, dispersing the crowd and restoring calm in the area.
Bakare Oki expressed condolences to the family of the deceased rider and urged motorists, particularly tanker drivers, to obey speed limits and traffic regulations.
He added that reckless driving and speeding continue to be major causes of road fatalities in Lagos State.
The tanker and the damaged motorcycle have been handed over to the police for further investigation and possible prosecution.
