A dispatch rider was killed on Saturday in a multiple road traffic accident involving two trucks at Ijesha, inward Mile 2, Lagos State.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) disclosed this in a statement signed by its Permanent Secretary, Dr Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu.
According to the agency, its Eagle Response Team promptly responded to the accident, which involved a FAW truck with registration number T-30364LA, an Iveco truck with registration number KSF 958 XV and the dispatch rider.
LASEMA said preliminary investigation showed that the crash was caused by reckless driving and wrongful road use by the two truck drivers.
The agency explained that the FAW truck hit the Iveco truck while both vehicles were allegedly dragging for right of way. The Iveco truck subsequently struck the dispatch rider from behind.
The dispatch rider died in the accident, while officers of the Nigeria Police Force from Okota Division evacuated his remains and deposited them at a morgue for identification and further necessary procedures.
The two trucks were later removed from the main carriageway and parked at a designated lay-by to prevent further obstruction and restore the free flow of traffic along the corridor.
LASEMA said its Eagle Response Team and police personnel remained at the scene during the operation, adding that the road was subsequently declared safe for motorists and other road users.
Oke-Osanyintolu commiserated with the family of the deceased and prayed for the repose of his soul.
He reiterated the commitment of the Lagos State Government to protecting all road users, particularly vulnerable road users, and urged commercial drivers to desist from reckless driving, wrongful overtaking and dangerous competition for lanes.
LASEMA further advised motorists to strictly adhere to traffic regulations, stressing that road safety remained a collective responsibility and that avoidable crashes could be prevented through responsible driving.
