A citizen reporter and social affairs advocate, Ayodeji Olalekan Ayobami, popularly known as AyoDaReporter, has appealed to Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, to reconsider the decision to rename The Polytechnic, Ibadan, stressing that such a move risks erasing the institution’s long-standing legacy.

In an open letter addressed to the Governor, Ayobami acknowledged the significant contributions of the late Dr. Victor Omololu Sowemimo Olunloyo, describing him as a renowned scholar, respected statesman, and former governor whose life and accomplishments remain commendable.

However, the citizen reporter raised concerns over altering the name of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, which he described as one of Nigeria’s most respected academic institutions with decades of national and international recognition.

“The Polytechnic, Ibadan is not just a school; it is a symbol of our collective heritage, identity, and achievement. Its name holds academic and emotional significance for generations of Nigerians,” Ayobami stated.

While commending Governor Makinde’s passion for immortalizing past leaders, Ayobami urged him to explore alternatives that honour Dr. Olunloyo without tampering with the identity of an institution many Nigerians hold dear.

“True honour does not have to come at the cost of another legacy. Establishing a new institution, an academic centre, a School of Technology, or an Innovation Hub in Dr. Olunloyo’s name will be a lasting tribute without undermining the historical name of The Polytechnic, Ibadan,” he suggested.

Ayobami stressed that building on history rather than overwriting it sends the right message to present and future generations.

“Let us honour our heroes in ways that build upon history, not erase it. Institutions like The Polytechnic, Ibadan, belong to the people and must be preserved,” the open letter concluded.

Governor Makinde announced the decision to rename the Polytechnic during the interdenominational commendation service held for the late Dr. Olunloyo earlier this week, sparking reactions across the State.

The appeal from Ayobami adds to ongoing conversations from concerned stakeholders who are urging the government to find alternative ways to preserve both Dr. Olunloyo’s legacy and the historic identity of The Polytechnic, Ibadan.
