Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has joined the African Democratic Congress, marking a new phase in his political journey months after he walked away from the All Progressives Congress.
El-Rufai completed his registration at the party office in U/Sarki Ward, Kaduna, where he received his membership card in the presence of his loyal supporters.
Those who accompanied him included former appointees and several local government chairmen who have stood by him since he left the APC.
His move follows his resignation from the APC on March 10, when he announced that the party no longer aligned with his values. In his letter at the time, he wrote that “there is no desire on the part of those who currently control and run the APC to acknowledge, much less address, the unhealthy situation of the party”.
He added that he had consistently raised concerns over the party’s direction for two years but received no response from its leadership.
According to him, the APC had drifted from the ideals that guided the 2013 merger which brought it to national prominence.
El-Rufai played a central role in that merger and was a vocal advocate of the party’s early vision. His defection, therefore, is being viewed as a signal that the internal cracks within the APC are deepening.
