Former Super Eagles coach and one of Nigeria’s most respected football figures, Christian Chukwu, is dead. He passed away on Saturday, April 12, 2025, at the age of 74.

Details surrounding his death were still sketchy as of the time of filing this report. However, the news has sparked an outpouring of grief from fans and the football community.

Chukwu, affectionately called “Chairman,” was a towering figure in Nigerian football, admired for his contributions both on the field as a player and on the sidelines as a coach.

His name became a household one in the 1980s and early 2000s, especially after he led Nigeria to several international competitions and contributed immensely to the development of the national team.

It would be recalled that in 2021, false reports about his death had gone viral on social media, forcing the former coach to publicly debunk the claims during his 70th birthday celebration on January 4 of that year.

“I am terribly embarrassed with this news that I am dead. Several people have been calling me from across the world since the news broke. I am still investigating the source of the story,” Chukwu had told journalists then.

Despite battling health challenges in recent years, Chukwu remained a revered voice in Nigerian sports, often consulted for advice and mentorship by younger generations of footballers.

The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) and other stakeholders are yet to issue official statements on his passing, but tributes are expected to pour in from around the globe in the coming hours.

Further updates will be provided as more details about his demise become available.
