The Ogun State Government has announced that the Gateway International Airport is now fully equipped with a world-class aerodrome lighting system, affirming its readiness to accommodate scheduled local and international flight operations.

The Special Adviser to Governor Dapo Abiodun on Media and Strategy, Hon. Kayode Akinmade, disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday.

He explained that the installation of cutting-edge lighting systems at the facility positions the airport among the best-equipped in the country and capable of competing with any airport of similar category globally.

“The airport has convincingly met all necessary aviation standards. We have installed state-of-the-art lighting systems that make the airport fully operational for both day and night flights,” Akinmade stated.

According to him, the lighting infrastructure includes a Category I (CAT I) approach lighting system, designed to aid pilots during poor visibility, especially on final approach to the runway.

He added that the system incorporates runway elevated end lights, displaced threshold lights, and runway edge lights — all tailored to enhance visual guidance and flight safety.

“Precision Approach Path Indicators (PAPI), a row of colored lights that offer glide path guidance during approach, are also in place to assist pilots in achieving safe and precise landings,” he noted.

He further revealed that the Gateway Airport is classified as a Category 9 fire cover facility, meaning aircraft of all sizes can land at any time, regardless of daylight or weather conditions.

“The Gateway International Airport is ready to host both passenger and cargo aircraft. This includes wide-body planes such as the Boeing 747, Boeing 777, and Airbus A380,” he added.

Akinmade also spoke about passenger experience, highlighting the presence of premium VIP lounges and other aesthetic amenities tailored to cater to business travelers.

“We’ve made provisions for top-class lounges with modern workspaces, enabling passengers to hold meetings or attend to work in comfort while awaiting their flights,” he said.

Earlier, the government had emphasized the scale of the infrastructure, noting that the airport boasts a 3.4-kilometer runway and an 82,000-square-meter apron, both capable of handling large commercial and cargo aircraft.
