The International Human Rights Commission IHRC/Corporation INTERPOL Center USA in Nigeria has warned that rising insecurity and economic hardship could undermine Nigeria’s democratic gains unless urgent measures are taken to improve citizens’ welfare.
A statement signed by the Head of Media and Strategic Communications, IHRC, Fidelis Onakpoma, quoted
the Head of IHRC Diplomatic Mission in Nigeria, Amb. Duru Hezekiah, in a post-June 12 reflection, as saying that democracy must be judged not only by the conduct of elections, but by its ability to deliver security, economic opportunities and improved living conditions for citizens.
Hezekiah averred that June 12 remains a powerful symbol of Nigeria’s democratic journey and should inspire renewed commitment to policies that directly impact the lives of ordinary Nigerians.
He said, “Democracy must go beyond the ballot box. It must be reflected in the safety of our communities, affordable living conditions, respect for human rights and opportunities for citizens to thrive.”
The commission acknowledged ongoing efforts by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration in economic reforms, infrastructure development and security interventions, but stressed the need for faster and more visible outcomes.
Expressing concern over persistent attacks on communities and farming areas, IHRC noted that insecurity continues to threaten livelihoods, food production and economic stability.
Hezekiah also urged leaders to remain focused on governance and service delivery as political activities gradually build up towards the 2027 general elections.
He added, “Elections are important, but democracy must ultimately deliver security, justice, opportunity and prosperity. Nigerians deserve a country where businesses can grow, farmers can work without fear and young people can access meaningful opportunities.”
The commission further reaffirmed its commitment to promoting peace, democratic governance, humanitarian development and human rights protection, while calling on all stakeholders to work together towards a more secure, inclusive and prosperous Nigeria.
