The Kano State Government has declared Thursday, June 26, 2025, as a public holiday to commemorate the beginning of the new Islamic year, Hijrah 1447AH.
This was made known in a statement signed by the state’s Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, on Wednesday.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf congratulated Muslims across the state for witnessing the start of the Islamic calendar year, which begins with the month of Muharram.
He urged the Muslim faithful and all residents of Kano State to use the occasion for sober reflection, prayers, and to renew their commitment to peace, unity, and development both in Kano and the country at large.
Governor Yusuf expressed optimism that the new year would bring renewed hope, progress, and stability to the state and Nigeria.
The public holiday applies to workers in public institutions across the state.
The Islamic New Year, known as Hijrah, marks the migration of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW) from Makkah to Madinah, an event regarded as the start of the Islamic lunar calendar.
Several states across the country, including Kwara and Oyo State, have also declared work-free days to honour the occasion.
