Tragedy struck in the Igando area of Lagos State after a man identified simply as Golden was shot dead by yet-to-be-identified gunmen.
The incident was said to have happened on Tuesday at Fatoki Street, where the attackers reportedly stormed the neighbourhood on a motorcycle before opening fire on the victim.
A police source familiar with the incident disclosed on Thursday that officers who responded to a distress call met the victim lying in a pool of blood.
According to the source, the deceased was rushed to a hospital, where doctors confirmed him dead before his body was deposited in a morgue.
“The report we received indicated that some armed men invaded the area and shot the victim. Our operatives moved to the scene immediately, but he was already in critical condition when he was found,” the source stated.
Although the exact motive behind the attack remained unclear as of press time, the police source disclosed that investigations had commenced to identify and apprehend those responsible.
Meanwhile, an anti-cultism group, Confra Naija, alleged in a post that the killing was connected to a dispute over proceeds from internet fraud, popularly referred to as Yahoo money.
The platform, however, maintained that despite rumours linking rival cult groups to the incident, preliminary findings suggested it was not cult-related.
It added that the attackers reportedly rode into the street, located the victim where he was seated outside, and shot him at close range before escaping.
Efforts to reach the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, Abimbola Adebisi, were unsuccessful as calls and text messages sent to her were not responded to as of the time of filing this report.
The latest incident came days after a shawarma seller identified simply as Andy was allegedly killed by suspected cultists in the Sangotedo area of the state.
