A middle-aged man has been killed after he was struck by a speeding vehicle while attempting to cross the Ojoo-Iwo Road Expressway at Orogun Bus Stop in Akinyele Local Government Area of Oyo State.
The fatal incident occurred around 9 p.m. on Friday, according to eyewitnesses, while the identity of the victim had yet to be established as of Saturday.
Witnesses said the driver of the vehicle fled the scene immediately after knocking down the pedestrian, leaving his lifeless body on the roadside.
One of the eyewitnesses, who identified herself simply as Iya Kadijat, said she was waiting to board a commercial vehicle when the accident occurred.
“I was at the bus stop when the incident happened. I was waiting to board a commercial vehicle to General Gas Bus Stop, under the bridge before Iwo Road, when I suddenly heard a loud noise. The driver did not stop at all, while the man died immediately,” she said.
She added, “I was so panicked, so I didn’t know what to do. I had to leave immediately in an available Micra taxi.”
Another resident, who declined to be named, said the victim was still unidentified as residents could not recognise him after making inquiries within the community.
“Almost all the shops were closed at that time because of yesterday’s weather. This morning, we asked around the community and nobody knows him,” the eyewitness said.
The resident appealed to relevant authorities to evacuate the corpse to prevent environmental and public health concerns.
“We are calling on the authorities concerned to come and evacuate the corpse before it causes environmental hazards. We are also calling on the authorities to announce on radio and television stations that whoever has a missing family member around Orogun and Agbowo, especially a man, should check the morgue of a nearby hospital,” the witness added.
When contacted, the Oyo State Police Command said it had been informed of the incident.
The Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Olayinka Ayanlade, said he would contact the appropriate authorities to ensure the victim’s body was evacuated from the scene.
