Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, on Thursday expressed delight over the successful return of the first batch of 345 pilgrims from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, describing the development as a feat many people initially considered impossible.

The pilgrims, comprising 151 males and 194 females, arrived at the Gateway International Airport, Ilisan-Iperu Remo, aboard a Flynas A330 aircraft at about 8:41 p.m. after completing the 2026 Hajj pilgrimage in the holy cities of Mecca and Medina.

Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr Tokunbo Talabi, at a reception organised for the returning pilgrims, Abiodun said the smooth departure and return of the pilgrims underscored the state’s commitment to efficient Hajj operations.

“I feel very happy and elated because many people thought this day would not be possible, but we thank God Almighty for making it a reality.

“The departure was very smooth, the return has been smooth, and the handling of passengers has gone very well,” the governor said.

The arrival of the pilgrims marked another milestone for the Gateway International Airport, which received the worshippers on a direct international flight from Saudi Arabia following the successful completion of this year’s Hajj exercise.

Top government officials, including the Head of Service, Mr Olarenwaju Iskeel Saka, joined other dignitaries in receiving the pilgrims at the airport.

Abiodun commended the pilgrims for their conduct throughout their stay in the Holy Land, noting that they represented Ogun State positively during the spiritual exercise.

He assured them of the government’s continued support towards improving Hajj operations and pilgrims’ welfare in subsequent years.

The governor also urged them to sustain the values and lessons acquired during the pilgrimage by demonstrating humility, obedience to constituted authority and good conduct in their daily activities.

“I want to charge them to let people see the signs of a transformed person in them, greater humility, obedience to the law, goodness and conduct that reflect the experience of someone who has just returned from the Holy Land,” he added.

Speaking with journalists shortly after arrival, the Consultant to the Governor on Islamic Affairs and leader of the first batch of pilgrims, Sheikh Iskeel Lawal Sugar, commended the governor for his dedication to the welfare of the pilgrims.

“I want to appreciate our Governor for his efforts in Hajj affairs. He was constantly calling to check on us in Mecca. He is a good leader,” he said.

Some of the returning pilgrims, including Alhaji Ayomide Adetunji and Alhaja Tawa Balogun, expressed gratitude to God for a successful pilgrimage and safe return home.

They also appreciated the state government for the welfare and support provided throughout their stay in Saudi Arabia, describing the pilgrimage as memorable and rewarding.

The pilgrims further described their direct arrival at the Gateway International Airport as convenient and historic, while commending the government for ensuring a seamless travel experience.
