The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Osun State Command, has dismantled and destroyed an illegal mining site located at Sambisa area, Kajola, Atakumosa West Local Government Area of Osun State.

The operation, which took place on Friday, was led by the State Commandant, CC Igbalawole Sotiyo, as part of the corps’ ongoing efforts to combat illegal mining activities in the state.

Speaking at the site, Commandant Sotiyo revealed that the illegal operation was uncovered through intelligence gathering and surveillance, emphasizing that the NSCDC remains committed to tackling the menace of illegal mining.

“This illegal mining site at Sambisa area was discovered through intelligence gathering and surveillance. This move is aimed at curbing the menace of illegal mining in Osun State,” Sotiyo stated.

He further disclosed that the suspects at the site admitted to operating without the necessary licenses or authorization, in violation of the country’s mining laws.

Equipment Destroyed as Suspects Flee

As part of the enforcement action, the NSCDC destroyed several mining tools found on the river, including draglines, pumping machines, and other equipment used in the illegal operations.

“The suspects confessed to not having the necessary license or authorization to conduct operations in line with the law of the land,” Sotiyo affirmed.

While some individuals were arrested at the scene, others managed to escape, abandoning their equipment. The commandant, however, assured the public that the fleeing suspects would soon be apprehended and brought to justice.

“The suspects arrested during the operation will be charged to court. Though some of them fled the scene, abandoning their equipment, I assure the public that we will soon arrest them to face the consequences of their actions,” he vowed.

NSCDC Vows Continued Crackdown

Reiterating the NSCDC’s mandate to safeguard the country’s solid mineral resources, Sotiyo warned that the agency would continue to clamp down on illegal mining activities across the state.

He urged individuals involved in the practice to desist from unlawful mining to avoid prosecution.

Additionally, the command called on members of the public to report any illegal mining activities in their communities to help combat environmental degradation and economic sabotage.

The Osun NSCDC Command however urged citizens to be vigilant and support security agencies in their efforts to rid the state of illegal mining operations.
