Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has cautioned council chairmen across the state that his administration will not tolerate weakness or negligence in the fight against insecurity.
He gave the warning in Asaba while expressing concern over the growing cases of kidnapping and other crimes in several communities.
The governor said the security situation demands urgent attention from local government leaders, noting that they are the first line of response in their various areas.
He added that any chairman who fails to act decisively risks losing their position.
“If you are weak as a council chairman, we will remove you,” Oborevwori said.
He urged youths and residents to work with security agencies and vigilantes instead of using social media to spread tension during crises.
According to him, the trend of online incitement only worsens insecurity and distracts from the real work of tackling criminals.
He stressed that security is a shared duty, reminding elected officials that they campaigned to lead their people and must stay fully involved in stabilizing their communities.
He also charged House of Assembly members and commissioners to contribute actively to restoring peace across Delta’s councils.
Oborevwori pointed to the growing influx of criminal elements from neighbouring states as a factor intensifying the crisis.
He said the state will soon deploy modern technology to detect and track those behind violent crimes.
The governor also directed council chairmen to hold regular security council meetings and keep constant communication with the state authorities.
He warned that the ALGON chairman and executive members would be held responsible if council leaders fail to meet this obligation.
He encouraged collaboration with traditional rulers, saying their influence remains crucial in addressing drug abuse and other social vices affecting young people.
He noted that his administration will not accept laxity from any council boss and will not hesitate to set examples where necessary.
“By the time we use one or two persons as examples, others will sit up,” he said.
