Ogun State Government has commenced a comprehensive electricity consumption audit as part of renewed efforts to achieve uninterrupted 24-hour power supply across the state.
Governor Dapo Abiodun disclosed this on Wednesday during an unscheduled inspection of the 4-megawatt gas-fired Independent Power Plant located at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
The governor said the audit would help the state determine actual electricity usage, improve distribution efficiency and identify leakages as well as cases of energy theft within the system.
According to him, the initiative has become necessary following Ogun State’s expanded powers to generate, transmit and distribute electricity independently.
Abiodun stressed that reliable power remains central to industrial growth, noting that electricity is a major driver of economic development and job creation.
He explained that the 4-megawatt facility, which forms part of the Ogun State Light-Up Project, is designed to strengthen energy supply and support the state’s ambition of achieving self-sufficiency in power generation.
The governor also noted that both the 34-megawatt plant in Onijanganjangan and the Oke-Mosan facility were built with expansion capacity, adding that the state has continued to upgrade its electricity distribution infrastructure.
“What you see here behind me is a gas-fired Independent Power Plant currently generating four megawatts. It doesn’t get cleaner than this,” Abiodun said.
He added that his administration remains committed to delivering on its promises without unnecessary rhetoric, stressing that ongoing investments in the sector are aimed at ensuring steady electricity supply for residents and businesses.
The governor also criticised the state of some existing power infrastructure, describing it as outdated and inefficient.
“You cannot compare this with some power plants that have been sitting idle for over 16 years, running on fuel oil. It is unacceptable that, in the 21st century, such outdated systems were procured,” he said.
Abiodun further disclosed that the newly established Ogun State Electricity Regulatory Commission would oversee electricity generation, transmission and distribution in the state, assuring that reforms in the sector would attract more investors.
He reiterated the administration’s goal of positioning Ogun as Nigeria’s preferred industrial destination with guaranteed 24-hour electricity supply at competitive rates.
