Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has directed security agencies to immediately go after the criminals responsible for the vandalism of the Festac-Alakija Bridge.
The governor described the incident as barbaric and criminal, warning that anyone found responsible would be made to face the full weight of the law.
Sanwo-Olu gave the directive in a statement issued on Friday by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Gbenga Omotoso.
The governor also allayed concerns over the safety of the bridge, saying an assessment carried out by officials of the Office of Infrastructure showed that its structural integrity remained intact.
Sanwo-Olu said remedial work would be carried out immediately to protect the affected columns and prevent further damage.
“Lagos will not tolerate any act of vandalism because it is barbaric and criminal,” the governor said.
He added, “I have been informed by officials of the Office of Infrastructure who visited the bridge that the structural integrity of the bridge is intact and remedial work will be executed immediately to protect the columns.”
Sanwo-Olu further warned that the government would not allow criminals to destroy public infrastructure provided for the benefit of residents.
“Anyone who is found to be culpable in this horrendous, shameful and condemnable incident will surely face the law,” he said.
The governor urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities around public infrastructure to the appropriate security authorities.
He said, “Lagos has no place for such barbarism and acts of violence against our critical infrastructure and other facilities.”
Sanwo-Olu called on Lagosians to take ownership of public facilities by protecting them from vandals and other criminal elements.
“Lagosians are enjoined to keep an eye on public facilities to protect them against senseless attacks,” the governor added.
