Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has regained freedom from Kuje Prison after fulfilling bail conditions granted by a Magistrate Court sitting in Kuje, Abuja.
Sowore, alongside Nnamdi Kanu’s Special Counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, Kanu’s younger brother, Prince Emmanuel Kanu, and 11 other protesters, were arrested by operatives of the Nigeria Police Force over the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest held in Abuja last week.
They were arraigned before Magistrate Abubakar Umar Sai’id on charges bordering on unlawful assembly and disturbance of public peace.
The court granted each of them bail in the sum of ₦500,000 with the requirement of a verified National Identification Number, three-year tax clearance, and submission of international passports.
After completing the bail process, Sowore and the others were released from the Kuje Correctional Centre on Monday.
Shortly after his release, Sowore took to his verified Facebook page to criticise the police for what he described as an abuse of power, vowing to continue with his planned protest despite police warnings.
“I heard the CP of the Nigeria Police Force Lagos had the effrontery to warn that TIB & I are not to protest over Oworonsoki Demolitions. These unprofessional, worn-out officers have no place in our society. The mass action must go on,” he wrote.
The #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest, which led to the arrests, had called for the unconditional release of the detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, whose trial remains ongoing at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
