The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has added 120 megawatts (MW) to the National Grid through the energisation of two newly installed transformers at its 330/132/33 kilovolts Birnin Kebbi Transmission Substation in Kebbi State.

According to Ndidi Mbah, TCN’s General Manager, Public Affairs, the 100 MVA and 150 MVA transformers were energised at 1:18 p.m. and 2:56 p.m., respectively, on Friday. The new transformers have increased the substation’s capacity from 300 MVA to 450 MVA.

“This development provides the Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company with an additional 120 MW of bulk power for distribution to customers in Kebbi, Sokoto, and neighbouring areas,” Mbah stated. She added that the upgrade also ensures normal bulk power supply to Niamey in the Niger Republic.

The move aligns with TCN’s commitment to expanding and maintaining the nation’s transmission system to guarantee more effective and efficient bulk power transmission across Nigeria.

This addition has also contributed to Nigeria’s electricity generation, which previously stood at 5,148.34 MW as of April 25, 2025.
