The teacher accused of flogging a 12-year-old pupil to death in Anambra State has surrendered to the police, bringing an end to days of manhunt by security operatives.
The Anambra State Police Command said the suspect, Mrs Dim Ebere, 47, voluntarily reported at the Neni Police Station in Anaocha Local Government Area after sustained efforts by the command’s Safe School Protection Squad.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed in a statement on Saturday that the operation was carried out in collaboration with officers of the Neni Divisional Police Headquarters, alongside continuous engagement with stakeholders and community leaders in Adazi-Ani.
According to the police, the suspect is currently in custody and will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Awka for the conclusion of investigations.
The teacher had earlier gone into hiding after the death of the 12-year-old pupil, who reportedly died from injuries allegedly sustained after being flogged at a school in Adazi-Enu, Anaocha Local Government Area.
The police commended members of the Adazi-Ani community, the traditional institution and other stakeholders for their cooperation, saying their support contributed to the suspect’s surrender.
The command assured the bereaved family and the public that it remained committed to ensuring justice in the matter.
It also urged residents to remain calm, avoid taking the law into their own hands and continue to provide useful information to support ongoing investigations and other policing efforts across the state.
