Two security guards, Isikilu Dauda and Rasaki Abbas, have been arrested by the Ogun State Police Command over the death of a traveller, identified simply as Promise, in Ibafo area of the state.
The incident, which occurred on Thursday, was said to have been uncovered following a tip-off from a concerned resident, prompting detectives from the Ibafo Divisional Headquarters to mobilise to the scene.
The victim, who was reportedly rescued and rushed to a hospital, was said to have identified himself on the way and narrated that he was attacked and macheted by security guards after arriving in the area late the previous night.
He was, however, confirmed dead on arrival by a doctor.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed the incident in a statement on Monday, noting that preliminary investigation linked the suspects to the crime.
Babaseyi said, “Detectives promptly mobilised to the scene, rescued the victim and rushed him to the hospital for urgent medical attention. While en route, the victim identified himself and stated that he had been attacked and macheted by security guards after arriving in the area late the previous night.
“He was subsequently confirmed dead on arrival by the doctor on duty. The body has been deposited at the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu, for post-mortem examination.”
She added that a trail of blood from the scene led investigators to one of the suspects, while further efforts resulted in the arrest of the second suspect.
According to her, “Preliminary investigation revealed a trail of blood linking the scene directly to one of the suspects, leading to his arrest, while sustained efforts resulted in the apprehension of the second suspect. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend other fleeing accomplices.”
The police spokesperson disclosed that the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Eleweran, Abeokuta, for further investigation.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Bode Ojajuni, condemned the act and assured that all those involved would be brought to justice.
“The Command strongly condemns this act and assures the public that all those involved will be brought to justice. Ogun State Police Command maintains zero tolerance for unlawful violence and extrajudicial acts,” the CP was quoted as saying.
The command urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities through its emergency lines.
