A female motorist lost her life on Sunday after her vehicle veered off the road and crashed into a roadside building at Mongoro, inward Ile Zik, along one of Lagos’ busiest corridors.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, in a statement issued by its Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Adebayo Taofiq, said preliminary investigations showed that the deceased, who was driving a Toyota Sienna with registration number LND 162 HB, lost control of the vehicle before it left the carriageway and rammed into the building.
According to the agency, the impact of the collision was severe, resulting in the driver’s immediate death. She was the only occupant of the vehicle at the time of the accident.
LASTMA said its personnel, who were on routine patrol in the area, responded promptly by securing the crash scene and managing traffic to prevent gridlock and secondary accidents. The agency added that despite the temporary disruption to vehicular movement, normal traffic flow was restored within a short period.
Security operatives from the Afonka Police Post under the Shasha Divisional Police Headquarters also provided security during the evacuation exercise.
Reacting to the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare Oki, described the tragedy as a painful reminder of the dangers associated with excessive speed and reckless driving.
“Every journey must be undertaken with prudence, patience and an unwavering commitment to established traffic regulations. No destination is worth the ultimate sacrifice of human life,” he said.
Bakare Oki noted that excessive speed remains one of the leading causes of fatal road crashes, urging motorists to exercise caution, restraint and responsibility while behind the wheel.
He also advised drivers to ensure their vehicles are in good mechanical condition before embarking on any journey, warning against using vehicles with unresolved mechanical faults.
The LASTMA boss extended the agency’s condolences to the family of the deceased and prayed for the strength to bear the loss.
