Former Governor of Ogun State, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, has described the passing of the Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Dr. Sikiru Kayode Adetona, Ogbagba II, as a monumental loss to Nigeria.

Reacting to the news of the revered monarch’s death on Sunday, July 13, 2025, Amosun said he received the announcement with deep shock, especially as it came just hours after the country was plunged into mourning over the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

“His departure is not only a huge loss to the people of Ijebuland but to all of us in Ogun State, and indeed, Nigeria,” Amosun stated. “Kabiyesi was a respected monarch and a royal colossus whose influence reached far beyond Ijebu.”

He extended heartfelt condolences to the Adetona Royal Family, the Ijebu Traditional Council, and the people of Ijebuland, noting that Oba Adetona’s 65-year reign was distinguished by selfless service, visionary leadership, and an unwavering dedication to the growth of traditional institutions.

Amosun praised the monarch’s courage and wisdom, saying he transformed the Awujale’s stool into one of the most revered in Nigeria. “Kabiyesi distinguished himself as a pillar of stability and a rallying point across Yorubaland and Nigeria,” he said.

According to him, the late monarch’s fearless contributions to public discourse and his passion for truth earned him widespread admiration and national respect. “His patriotic interventions on national issues and deep concern for the welfare of his people will not be forgotten.”

Amosun prayed for Almighty Allah to grant the departed royal father Aljannah Firdaus, while asking God to comfort the Anikinaiya Ruling House and the entire Ijebu community over what he described as “an irreparable loss.”

“Adieu, Kabiyesi Orisa Ijebu,” he concluded.
