The Ogun State Government has announced that the newly renovated 250-bed hospital, known as the Ogun State Medical Center of Excellence located in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, will be commissioned in December 2025.

Governor Dapo Abiodun disclosed this during an inspection of the project on Sunday, where he expressed satisfaction with the progress of work done and assured that the facility would begin operations soon.

According to the governor, the project, which was inherited from the immediate past administration, had initially been left uncompleted but has now undergone extensive renovation and reconstruction under his government.

“We are looking forward to the completion of this project. You can see the exterior is looking very nice, we’ve started landscaping, they’ve built an entrance canopy and the gate, oxygen equipment is working,” Abiodun said.

The governor added that the facility would be managed by the Abuja Medical Center of Excellence, which has the King’s College Hospital, London, as one of its international partners. He explained that the collaboration would ensure the hospital operates at a world-class standard.

“The Abuja Medical Center of Excellence has agreed in principle that if indeed this facility is completed in line with what we planned to, the way we’ve conceived it, and if indeed it is to be run by Healthshare, they will partner with this facility,” Abiodun stated.

Governor Abiodun emphasized that the renovated hospital will play a major role in curbing medical tourism and improving healthcare access for residents within and outside the state.

“We know how much Nigerians spend on medical tourism. By the time this hospital is commissioned, all that will stop,” he said. “You can imagine the number of patients coming from the hinterland, from Oyo, Osun and Ekiti states, who will now find this a more convenient location before Lagos.”

He described the project as one of the administration’s gifts to the people of Ogun State during the festive season. “My intention is to come, by the grace of God, to commission this project sometime in December. This will be one of our Christmas presents to Ogun State,” the governor said.

Abiodun explained that the decision to involve private partners was to ensure effective management and sustainability of the facility. “We decided that the best way to run this hospital and make it useful to our people was to find a credible partner. Through our public-private partnership office, we identified Healthshare Services Limited, and last year we signed a memorandum of understanding with them to complete and manage the facility,” he added.

The Project Manager of Healthshare Integrated Solutions, Dr. Frank Etang, affirmed that the company would meet the December target for the hospital’s commissioning.

“We are presently rounding up work on the first floor where we have the theatre, ICU, and wards. The basement, ground floor, radiology, laboratory, and consulting rooms are already in place. We are ready for that commissioning,” Etang assured.
