Free Wi-Fi feels like a gift, whether you’re at the airport, hotel, a café, or even a shopping mall. But what many people don’t realise is that public Wi-Fi can also be one of the easiest ways for hackers to steal your personal information.

When you connect to an unsecured Wi-Fi network, everything you do, from logging into your email to entering your bank details can potentially be seen by someone else on the same network. This kind of attack is called a “man-in-the-middle” attack, and it’s how cybercriminals silently intercept your data.

What Can Go Wrong?

Hackers can see what you type, including your passwords or bank details.

Some fake Wi-Fi names like “Free_WiFi” or “HotelGuest123” are set up by scammers to trick you into connecting.

Once connected, they can show fake pop-ups or login pages to steal your personal information.

How to Stay Safe:

1. Avoid Banking or Shopping on Public Wi-Fi

Wait until you’re on a secure, private connection to log into sensitive accounts.

2. Use Mobile Data When Possible

It’s safer to use your phone’s hotspot than to connect to an unknown network.

3. Use a VPN (Virtual Private Network)

A VPN encrypts your traffic so no one else can read it even if you’re on public Wi-Fi.

4. Forget the Network After Use

Always disconnect and “forget” the network so your device doesn’t auto-connect next time.

5. Turn Off Auto-Connect

Most phones and laptops are set to automatically join known Wi-Fi networks. Disable this feature to stay in control.

In conclusion, free Wi-Fi is convenient, but convenience shouldn’t come at the cost of your security. A few smart choices can keep your private information safe, even in public spaces.
