Artificial Intelligence (AI) is changing the world and not always for the better. Deepfakes, or AI-generated fake videos and voices, are being used to spread false information and scams.

Imagine getting a voice note that sounds exactly like your friend or boss asking you to “urgently send ₦50,000.” Or seeing a video of a public figure saying something they never said. That’s the world we live in today where seeing isn’t always believing.

At Astrosec, during our recent awareness sessions, we demonstrated how easy it is for AI tools to clone a voice from a short recording. The audience was shocked not by the technology itself, but by how convincingly real it sounded.

How to Protect Yourself:

Verify before acting: If you receive an unusual voice message or video, confirm directly through another channel before sending money or sharing it.

Be skeptical of viral clips: Don’t forward or repost sensational videos without checking if they’re real.

Protect your digital identity: Avoid uploading sensitive voice or video content unnecessarily.

Stay informed: Learn about deepfakes, AI scams, and how they’re spreading awareness is your best defence.

AI can empower, but it can also deceive. The best response isn’t fear, it’s education, critical thinking, and vigilance.
