Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State has announced the passing of His Royal Majesty, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the Awujale of Ijebuland, who died on Saturday, July 13, 2025, at the age of 91.
Oba Adetona, who ascended the throne in 1960, was Nigeria’s longest-reigning monarch. His 65-year reign brought not only dignity to the traditional institution but also remarkable transformation to Ijebuland and Ogun State at large.
Governor Abiodun, in a statement released on Saturday, described the monarch as “a revered royal father who led with unmatched wisdom and foresight.” He noted that Oba Adetona’s reign would be remembered for his enduring legacy of peace, development, and cultural pride.
“It is with profound sadness that I announce the passing of His Royal Majesty, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the revered Awujale of Ijebuland. Oba Adetona joined his ancestors today, July 13, 2025, at the age of 91, leaving behind a remarkable legacy that has significantly shaped Ijebuland, Ogun State, and Nigeria in general,” the governor said.
He added, “It is indeed double sadness that Oba Adetona joined his ancestors the same day former President Muhammadu Buhari died in a hospital in London, United Kingdom.”
Throughout his reign, Oba Adetona was seen as a pillar of unity and progress, committed to uplifting his people through educational initiatives, economic empowerment, and cultural rejuvenation. He was widely admired for modernising the Ojude Oba festival, turning it into an internationally recognised cultural celebration that showcased Ijebu heritage.
Under his watch, Ijebuland grew in stature, becoming a symbol of development and tradition. His influence reached beyond Ogun, earning him national and international respect.
“As we mourn his passing, let us celebrate the extraordinary life of Oba Adetona and honour his contributions to our country. His wisdom, kindness, and unwavering commitment to the betterment of his people will forever be etched in our hearts,” Governor Abiodun added.
