The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has refuted reports claiming that a naval officer, Lt. Ahmed Yerima, was the target of an assassination attempt in Abuja.
The Command, in a statement issued by its spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, described the claims circulating on social media as false and capable of causing unnecessary fear among residents. She urged the public to ignore the report and rely on verified information.
According to her, “The attention of the FCT Police Command has been drawn to publications circulating on social media alleging an attempted assassination on Lt. Ahmed Yerima.
The Command wishes to categorically state that no such incident has been reported or recorded anywhere within the Federal Capital Territory.
“The public is advised to disregard this false information and desist from spreading unverified claims capable of causing unnecessary panic.”
She added that residents should remain alert and report suspicious activities to the nearest police division or the Command’s emergency lines for quick response.
The naval officer, Yerima, has been in the spotlight following his confrontation with the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, over a disputed piece of land said to be linked to former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo.
The recorded clash drew nationwide attention, prompting reactions from government officials and members of the public.
Wike later explained why he visited the land in question, located at No. 1946, Gaduwa District, Abuja. He insisted that he has no issue with the military and respects the institution.
“I have respect for the military, and I’ll continue to respect them. I know what the institution stands for. I’m not a fool, I went to school. So anyone trying to suggest I have problems with them is wrong. I have no problem with the military, and I never will. Why would I have issues with the government? But this is a private matter,” he said.
