When we talk about cybercrime, most people think of hackers. But sometimes, the threat comes from inside; an employee, contractor, or even a trusted partner who misuses access or data.

In small and medium businesses (SMEs), insider threats are rising because access control is often weak, and monitoring is limited. It doesn’t always happen out of malice; sometimes it’s carelessness, an employee clicking a phishing link or sending sensitive information to the wrong person.

How to Protect Your Business:

Limit access: Not everyone needs access to every file. Use role-based permissions for sensitive data.

Educate staff regularly: A 10-minute monthly safety reminder can prevent costly mistakes.

Implement password policies: Enforce strong passwords and 2FA on all business accounts.

Track system activity: Keep an eye on data downloads, logins, and file sharing. Early detection stops small issues from growing big.

Exit protocols matter: When an employee leaves, immediately disable their email and system accounts.

Cybersecurity starts with trust but it should be verified trust. Policies, awareness, and basic monitoring help create a safer workplace for everyone.
